Touch me Baby!

I've talked about Gwyn before, she's incredible, but she shows how scripting will change soon and become even more low prim. Yay low prim.... I love this coming down the pipe.

Aww Noelyci, you're too kind :)

But yes, this opens up quite a lot of new possibilities. bucky Barkley is currently working on a LSL-based "imagemap" feature (using lists to flag "hot touch" rectangular areas, and link each rectangle automatically to a function) which will make HUDs or object interfaces quite easy to script. No more need to add prim-based buttons for doing complex interfaces — you can just use one script and one prim.

Granted, there is a problem right now with giving feedback. A button made of a prim can be changed to show that it was pressed (eg. it changes shape, colour, glow status, or a texture). A button which is just an area on the surface of a prim cannot (at least not so easily). However, there might be a solution: you can use particles to display a soft, fuzzy "halo" on where you've touched (but this won't work on a HUD!). So interface designers will have to be creative about the way they give feedback about pressed buttons! (and I'm sure they will)
