Negativity.... 2 stars?

Someone made me think about it again, negativity before trying to contact me, they left me 2 stars on SLX. I must say that as a designer and content creator this stuff sends me for a loop. I try not to worry bout it, I try to say, not everybody is going to like my stuff. However, the fact of the matter is that I would spend weeks to make someone happy because that's my true job. This is what I sent to that individual:

Noelyci Ingmann: I'm sorry you didn't like the DarkRayne, I wish you'd gotten ahold of me so I could make it what you wanted it to be, it's a low prim castle so there are tradeoffs, you also could have looked at it in world beforehand. If you want to tell me what your concerns are I can try and address them.

It's too bad that person didn't get ahold of me, They still haven't bothered to after I sent them that. I would have more than earned the 5 stars. They would have gotten exactly what they wanted if they had just bothered to get ahold of me. But the fact of the matter is they didn't. So.... no I won't be taken advantage of, but remember most of us work really hard and would love to make you happy, try reaching out, rather then taking the wind out of someone's sales.

You can see more about how I feel about this here.

Ipod Upgrade - Cool trick - Video Link Love

Just found out about one of the coolest new features of the upgrade to the ipod in the latest update purely by experimentation. You can now click on an embedded youtube video from a site and it'll take you to it and play it. This was always frustrating when i was using my feedreader and saw video because I'd have to remember to go watch it later. Now I can just watch it. Very nice little upgrade. In honor of that here's some of what I've been watching:

Temerity Jane - She makes me chuckle every day, I'm a TJ fan and this is link love, completely un-Second Life related.

This is an old one but a good one, I watched it when first learning to build hoping to be as smooth and fast as this, it isn't a tutorial but if you watch closely you can take alot from it. Robbie Dingo is the builder in this one and he makes a beautiful piece of virtual art for a great musician.

Finally we have another tutorial from Torley, this is another excellent introduction to the subject of tiny prims, something absolutely nessecary if you want to make jewelry or avatar attachments. I myself am not incredibly proficient in them but being familiar with all the aspects of building is always good.

So, there you go, if you have an ipod or iphone, watch them, if not, watch them anyway.

Noel.

Math Class again - Website Statistics

Interesting statistics concerning this site:

Adsense reports that in the lifetime of the site I've now gotten 7,923 page views.

Analysics reports that since March 1st, (when I started tracking through them) I've gotte 2924 page views. This is only 400 more since I last ran this type of post on June 16th, so that's a bit disheartening. Especially since 117 of them came from one referrer in that time frame.

The most popular page on the site is no longer the page describing my first castle, the DarkRayne. The most popular page is now the page describing my review of the Snook Tardis, this is understandable I supposse as I was linked to by New World Notes for that review. Again I wish it was for my own designs but the traffic spike is nice. That page has had 117 views in all.

Referring sites in order of referrals, all in single digits:

google search
direct
draft.blogger.com (Wow, this is embarassing, because the third most referring site is me checking it after I post. Wow.)
slfashionality.blogspot.com (Pheobe's blog, thank you Pheobe!)

SLX dosen't even hit the radar anymore, however I've been so busy working on the custom of Endless Nights that I've not released 'new' product there in awhile and that could account for that. However I'm now getting 133 visits on direct typing of the site, which is down, and 225 on google searches, which is also down.

Biggest search words that get people to the site have changed slightly:

things to do at a party (Has moved up to number one this is from when I was trying to figure out how to do the sim opening for Natalis and was asking all your opinion.)
ingmann design group (Finally joins the ranks)

Visiting countries:
United States
Canada (swaps places with the UK)
United Kingdom
Germany (Comes to 4th from 7th)
Italy (Comes to 5th from 8th)
Netherlands (Falls to 6th from 4th)
Belgium (Joins the list at 7th)
Austrailia (no change)
France (no change)
Portugal (Joins at 10th)

States in the US:
Oregon (Still Number 1 and still where I live so probably me since I check my own site and fiddle often.)
Kansas (Joins the list at #2)
California (Falls to 3rd from 2nd)
Minnesota (Joins the list at 4th)
Ohio (Joins the list at 5th)
Virginia (I know who this is and they fall to 6th from 4th)
New Jersey (I know who this is too and they fall to 7th from 5th)
Florida (Goes up one spot to 8th)
New York (Joins the list at 9th)
Texas (Falls two spots to 10th)

So there you go, once again just kind of interesting statistics to see where things come from.

IDG Brag Session - Endless Nights

So, we just finished the first full sim build we're allowed to talk about other then our main store location of Natalis. If you are one of my smart dedicated readers, one of the select few, then you know I've mentioned it before. But now you can read what one of the principal clients has to say about it. Neit has talked about how pleased she is with the results here.

A couple of fast quotes from her gushing praise:

"What he's created is an amazing sim full of surprises. He took his prefab buildings and did some modifications - some minor, some major - and finished the entire build in just over 3000 prims. The whole sim (minus furnishings and some landscaping) could fit on an open space sim!"

And...

"On top of only taking 3000 prims to build all of this, the lag is amazingly low - even with a tournament in progress. I've seldom seen the script performance on the sim go over 50K, and it usually stays between 10K and 15K, with a number of avatars on it. Now THIS is what most RP sims are lacking - or rather, have too much of."

I want to spend some time talking about the process and how it came about, some design decisions we made with our client and why things work as well as they do, but this is probably a multiple post type of situation. Suffice it to say that I love the feel of the sim, I enjoyed working on it and I and my crew enjoy playing there. I've gotten the ok to talk about the process from the principals involved and I plan to do a bit of a series on what it takes to do a full sim with a group of people. It's interesting and has lots of lessons inside it. So stay tuned.... meanwhile check out Endless Nights here.

Mall Rat

So if you look at my picks in my profile you'll see a few links and landmarks to my mainstore, but you'll notice I don't have mall locations. The reason for this is pretty simple. As a business owner, if the mall isn't profitable within 4 weeks, I dump it. I haven't yet been able to find a location that is consistently paying it's own rent and my main store is not able to support external locations at this point.

I think part of this may be the product line that we as a group focus on. Housing in SL dosen't quite fit into impulse purchases in the same way that clothing or skins do. You have to have virtual land to put up a house, or do it in a sandbox and be willing to pack it all in. You have to want something new, and generally the people that go looking are looking for a reason, not just seeing something cute and grabbing it. Now IDG as a concept is not just about houses, we're slowly working on furniture, some of our designers are quite good at clothing, and we've even dabbled in skins. As a group we do our best to know quite a bit about how Second Life works so we can do the custom installs and low lag sims such as Natalis and Endless Nights that we're attempting to stake our reputation on. However, putting our name in a mall is more likely to be a 'advertisement' then a purchasing vehicle. If someone sees us then they may remember us when they are ready to buy. In all honesty, I don't money left over after expenses to pay for advertising that dosen't give me a return on investment.

The longer I run IDG the more lessons I learn. When I started it was really about me and my friends maybe being able to afford our playground. Now it's more and more about what the return is and actual business planning and development of a theme and talent. I have been needing a marketing director for months, but that person is going to have to be someone who can create their own salary out of what he or she does for instance because I can't pay someone out of the hat. (Unless they want to be paid in moth's and dust bunnies.) Am I trying to say, o poor me and get you to feel pity? Of course not, although it'd be great if you buy, I'm in this for the long haul and I see no reason I won't be around. The reason I'm talking about this is so that you can learn from some of my lessons. The people who really truly succeed at running a business here take the lessons from the Real World, and apply them. Business plans, marketing, all of this stuff has merit here and though the mistakes don't 'cost' as much in financial terms they do still happen. I'll talk about those later....

Back to malls, I don't consider them a great investment for my business, dealing with a landlord and a location that dosen't pay for itself are the two problems I personally try and avoid. Now, having said that I'm opening a couple of mall stores with some sentimentality attached.

The first is on Winterfell and should be open soon. Serra Anasasi is one of the people who encouraged me very early on, a wonderful designer and a fair but firm landlord who watched me build the DarkRayne and even gave me my first gothic texture. (So you all can blame her for the monster I am now. *grin*)  I've not been a resident of Winterfell for a very long time because I needed the sandbox and retail location of my own place, however, it's always been my 'home' in my heart. In fact I have a sign on Natalis that points across the ocean to Winterfell, and.... the Winterfell pirates flag has been sunk just off my fishing dock. So I'm extremely glad that I have a small sidewalk cart in the new Winterfell Village to sell my wares from.

If you know of any places to put my second and third 'outlet' stores please let me know in the comments. O, and if you have a store and are interested in selling IDG products you can get our catalogue vendor and it'll pay you 10% commission on each sale.

Oops - Premature Postification.

My apologies, yesterday I posted the new castle photo but I hadn't yet gotten it on SLX or in the vendors, my fault for being extremely tired and shooting off a post before it was ready. Should be in the vendors and on SLX today.

Also, reminder, we're running a contest, details here.

Have a good day everyone.

Link Love - Backpacking Burro

Yes, NWN did this last week, but I have to clue you all in as well, if you want to see a great explorer's journal of secondlife you should check out Backpacking Burro's blog here. He does some great things but recently he visited the oldest created content in Second Life. The Beanstalk. This is something I visited myself and legend has it it was made in the 6 hours between when they closed business on opening day and came in in the morning by the first resident of Second Life. You really should go see this, Second Life and our virtual world certainly has a history, even if it's ephemeral. Wait.... isn't all history?

Why is Your Email so Funky?

So, some of you have experienced the fact that the email I use for this endeavour is noelyci_ineucelia. Some of you may even have wondered where ineucelia comes from as it's not my SL name. Well.... a long time ago in a galaxy shortly removed from this one I used to play a game called Star Wars Galaxies. I invested four years of my life roleplaying there and was one of the first jedi's on the server, back when it was an accomplishment. I no longer play the game for various reasons but the name stuck. So, if you want to read some fan fiction based on the roleplaying I did there you can check out my old site here.

Noelyci.com - New Domain.

So, Registrar.com offered me a free domain, and that's a very good price so... I took it. It works but it puts a banner at the bottom of the screen when you use it to forward to here. So... there's another way to find me but it's not as clean. At least nobody can grab the domain from under me. Oooo and....

Look! A money back guarantee...... on nothing. *grin*

Second Life on the Iphone!

This is taken directly from Katherine's blog, apologies for the copy but I couldn't say it better myself:
AjaxLife is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch! It’s currently about where AjaxLife itself was just over a year or so ago - you can chat to people, IM those on your friend list (online or offline this time ’round), and receive IMs from arbitrary people. Thus far, there is no movement, no inventory, no money transfers, etc.

To use it, simply visit http://ajaxlife.net on your iPhone or iPod touch. You will be redirected to a secure “login proxy”, which is used because the iPhone could not reliably run the code to encrypt your login details. From there you will be redirected to the standard server.
I have tried it on my Ipod Touch and though it's slow over WiFi it's entirely functional and very very cool. Now I just need to go to my local coffee joint and try it there.... I'm never going to get any 'First Life' work done again.

Oscaresque! - Link Love.

So you all know Pheobe, but maybe you didn't know Oscar. Oscar is the guy who beat her to me. (I kid, I kid...) I am his subject in Tiny Empires (which I'll do a review of soon, promise.) He's also a male model in Second Life and has decided to share the knowledge of looking studly with all of us. You can find his blog here.

And for the ladies, one shot of Oscar:

Primficiency Design Contest Winners!

Here you have the two top builds in our contest for efficient prim design, on the left is the winner done by Ainee Kohime is absolutely beautiful at exactly 25 prims it's a build she calls the Fanese Pavillion. It's truly a wonderful little house that you can see in the following pics, it has a fireplace and chandalier for heaven's sakes! The Asian build is one of three that Kessa Corvale sent to me, after saying she dosen't do houses! Each of them is darling in it's own right but this is the one I love the textures on most. She recieves second place and honorable mention for being the most prolific, she's truly a talent to watch. Both designers have been offered the chance to sell under the IDG label but those discussions are continuing and either way you should look both these talented ladies up. More pics of the winner below. Stay tuned to this space for our next contest, later this month.

Sunday, August 3, 2008

Damian Carbenell will be taking the main stage (and only stage) at Natalis at 7pm today! Please come hear this talented singer/songwriter and support his continued success. We'd love to have him for a weekly event. By the way gentleman, he packs in the ladies so you have a good chance of finding a date if you show up. The dance floor is open and the tunes are good. Hope to see you all there. By the way, this may end up being a limited attendance concert as last time we nearly crashed the sim, so if you really want to see him, make it early, it may be only 35-40 people allowed.
